WYNN OLIVER PDF Print E-mail

The Knarr Fleet sends its sympathy and special thoughts to family and close friends of Wynn Oliver, who passed away in March this year (2010).  A “pioneer” member of the Fleet, Wynn joined in 1968 (one year before the first IKC was held) with the acquisition of #91 from Berry Brooks, a co-founder of the Fleet and partner in Nordic Imports.

R.I.P.

Early in his racing career, Wynn got whacked very hard on the head by the boom, suffering long lasting injuries, and thereafter for many years always wore his trademark green helmet – green to complement the color of 91 which never changed during his “watch”.   Wynn was also one of a select few who remained faithful to their first – and only – Knarr throughout their association with the Fleet. For thirty plus years “Wynnship” made the starting line until retired from active competition, she languished up the San Rafael Canal, finally sinking in her berth.

Unable to find someone willing to undertake an enormous restoration, Wynn offered her back to the Scandinavian fleets and for shipping costs only, she found a new home in Norway.  Sadly, the ravages of time and neglect had done their job and 91 was never to sail again.

Few members of the Fleet were more loyal and supportive than Wynn, who will always be remembered by his contemporaries as one of its most colorful members.
