The Knarr is a strict one-design, constructed in 1943 by Erling Kristoffersen of Norway. More than 300 wooden Knarrs have been built, and since 1974 more than 140 fiberglass hulls have been created with the same weight distribution resulting in identical performance under sail. The Knarr is a fast and stiff boat, stable in the toughest conditions. As a racing sloop, the Knarr is extremely popular partly because it carries only a mainsail and jib and can be ably sailed by a crew of two and partly due to the class rules which ensure that all boats are identical. As a cruising boat the Knarr is easy to sail. It can carry full sail in all strengths of wind and its robustness has been proven over the years. The family is secure aboard a Knarr.
All over the world where Knarr boats are found, a unique comradeship has developed, rare in other classes. The International Knarr organizations are famous for their activity and every year arrange an international regatta or "IKC" in borrowed boats.
2004 San Francisco California / 2005 Oslo Norway / 2006 Copenhagen Denmark
The San Francisco Bay Knarr Fleet is growing each year as skippers and crew from other fleets discover the best friendly competition the bay has to offer. Knarrs can be purchased for as little as $5,000 to $20,000 and campaigned for less than $4,000 per year (including new sails). There is not a one-design class on San Francisco Bay that can match the excitement, friendship, and value that a Knarr provides.

In 1943, while dark clouds were hovering over Europe, the Knarr was born in Norway.
Designed by Erling L. Kristofersen. Over the next 25 years approximately 150 Knarrs were launched in Norway, and she became the most popular boat of her size.
Today, the Knarr fleet numbers approx. 120 boats in Norway, approximately 50 in the USA and well over 120 in Denmark. In 1954 she was approved as a national one-design class in Denmark. Borresen's yard in Vejle, Denmark, is the only licensed builder of the Knarr, with a production so far of more than 160 yachts, since 1974 built in fiberglass.

by Morten Heldal Haugerud (ON 138) This article describes the 50 year period 1943-1993. The period up to day will follow later. From the Norwegian KNARR Association webpage
Before 1940
The Saga of the Knarr started when Willy H. Johannesen and Lars Walløe made contact with Erling L. Kristofersen, and asked him to design a new "Folkboat". It should be an inexpensive boat for cruising and racing, Kristofersen was chosen because he had already designed fast boats. The main reason for doing this was that the Nordic Folkboat was regarded as an ugly boat in Norway.
